Help! Turnip took a tumble into the squash bin. We seek your aid in unearthing her by lightening the load from the bounteous piles of hyperlocal winter squash on the Produce Porch. It is truly the full gamut of winter squash available at this time, as the last squash to cure, Midori’s Tetsukabuto (Japanese for “iron helmet”), has just hit the Produce Porch. Whether you love the wee but flavorful Honeyboat Delicata, all the way up to the big boy Blue Hubbards, there is much to love in squash-land these days. Soup season is in full swing, as is pie season! Get those ovens and stove tops rumblin’!
A Delicata Situation
Winter squash harvest is always a joyful moment on local farms. It is the farmhand’s version of an autumn easter egg hunt. Loading up macrototes of all the different varieties and driving them back via tractor to the pack shed releases the dopamine of abundance. We are psyched to have representation in the winter squash category from many hyperlocal farms: Red Dog, Midori, Chimalow, Spring Rain, Chimacum Work Horse Project, and Tonnemaker Hill. Staff favorites are definitely Honeyboat Delicata, Red Kuri, Honeynut, and Black Futsu. Winter Luxury makes the most fantastic pumpkin pie filling. With the addition of Fall Fruits like Pomegranate, Cranberry, and Persimmons, it is feeling very cozy amidst the produce displays. We give mad gratitude to all these growers for providing shelf stable produce to carry us through the winter.

We put the “Mo” in Molasses
We are excited to welcome a fresh baked good offering from our Corner Kitchen Bake Team, a classic Molasses Cookie! Notes of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg cozy up to the dusted sugar top for amazing results. For a chewy soft autumn treat this is your go-to! Don’t forget about all the other favorite baked treats, like the notorious Rosemary Shortbread, or the Gluten-Free Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie. The chocolate chip zucchini muffin is a perennial staff pick as well (especially for breakfast!), as is the sumptuous Tahini Marbled Brownie (the pools of tahini are the best part!). Treat yourself to something sweet on these many long evenings ahead!
One Straw Revolution
Pork is the perfect complement to all of your winter squash preparations. We have some new offerings from our premier local pork purveyors, One Straw Ranch. Chief among them is the Loin Bacon, which is basically bacon to the “Nth” power. Stuff a gourd with one of One Straw’s ground pork varietals, you will not be mad about it. We go “whole hog” when we order direct from our farmers, so make sure you check out all the unique cuts on offer in the Meat Freezer.
Pot Heads
While Turner put the finishing touches on buttoning down the Nursery for the off-season, we still have a lavish selection of decorative pots for up-potting your prized house plants, and at reasonable prices for the volumes available. Many thanks to all the folks who have participated in the season ending Nursery sale this year, we moved through a lot of stock!
Cheeze-N-Grits
Nothing says “comfy-cozy” like a bowl full of steaming polenta with melted cheese and your favorite roasted winter squash. Fortunately, that dish just got more affordable with polenta and Rumiano brand cheeses being on deal for the first half of November. Polenta is the flint-corn-based Italian cousin to grits. A fun way to eat it is to open your polenta “tube” and slice thin rounds off the log, then crisp them up in high heat oil in your pan. We have two flavors of polenta available from Ancient Harvest, either original or a basil & garlic number. Also, six types of Rumiano cheese are on special as well. Everyone should cut into these cheese deals ASAP!
