INTERDEPENDENCE DAY
Declaration of Interdependence
We hold this truth to be self-evident: that Chimacum is an exceedingly rad place to live and work, and we are surrounded by charming and scintillating humans that bring joy and effervescence to the scene. We at CCF look forward to Chimacum Interdependence Day every year, as it falls right when we are starting to get weary of the summer influxes, and it provides a joyful boost to re-energize us around our mission statement: celebrating all the local connections possible, in all areas of human (and non-human) life. So whether you listen to Couer Criminel or DJ Lunch Lady, buy Spring Rain English cucumbers or Midori Mini English cucumbers, drink Finnriver cider or Alpenfire cider, there is something to bring us all together in this wacky land at the end of the continent. And that something is a new and vital Chimacum Pride, as exhibited on our special day of Interdependence. So, make a day out of it, and come dig all that Chimacum has to offer, including walking tours of the new Chimacum Commons, with whom we are field mates!
CHIMACUM GROWN
In the spirit of interdependence we would like to acknowledge all the growers in our immediate vicinity who make our porch so vibrant. Whether you love a cucumber from John and Roxanne at SpringRain Farm, a bunch of carrots from the crew at Red Dog Farm, diceable and dippable farmer field apples aka kohlrabi from Kodama Farm, or some tender, vibrant summer zucchini from Chimalow Produce, we are proud to be “Chimacum Grown” as early and as often as we can at the Corner. There are few counties in the world with as many blue chip small farms as we have, and even less rural towns. Take a pause and reflect on that the next time you stand on the “Agnes” (vegetable) side of the porch.
CASE DEALS
The latest addition to our growing CASE DEALS WALL is a lucky 13 pound’er of luscious Apricots (Robata, a free stone and Gold Rich) from Tonnemaker Hill Farm! Available for $38 bucks. That’s in addition to Rainier and Red cherry 5# and 20# cases! Fruit season has come screaming in like a hellion! We couldn’t be more jazzed!
SHORTY GOT CHIMALOW-LOW-LOW-LOW
Au contraire to Mac Demarco, salad days are definitively here to stay. Most growers have it coming out of their ears with nowhere to put it! Fortunately our Corner Kitchen is dedicated to keeping it local, and are stoked to be using Chimalow Produce’s salad greens in all of our salads in the Deli Case. Summer is the perfect time to keep it light with a salad on the run to the beach or lake!
SPRINGRAIN DELECTABLE DUCK
While you may know SpringRain Farm & Orchard for their cucumbers, tomatoes, or basil, they are also extremely savvy protein farmers to boot. We are excited to have their Whole Rabbit and Chicken Hearts back in stock, and their Whole Ducks are on sale as well. Our meat buyer Harvey, did a Duck up in style to show this town how it’s done. First they spatchcocked the duck, and then cooked it with some Friends of the Trees frozen gooseberries and Tonnemaker Apricots, before laying it on Bob’s Red Mill Polenta with a side of local braised Kale. Total gourmet action! A whole local duck is a true wow-moment on a table set for visiting friends or family.
Fun cookery notes from Harvey: “the only cooking fat used for this tasty meal was rendered duck fat from the lil lady herself, broth for the polenta was made with the roasted necks and trimmed veg plus mead and well water, acidic components for the greens came from the juice of the broiled gooseberries and a glug of rhubarb vinegar made with Shoot Star Farm rhubarb. Plus some thimbleberries, flowering thyme, and dill flowers from the garden for a wee bit of color.”
RED DOG GONE, MIDORI FALL CROPS ON!
We’d like to give one last proper send off to the Red Dog Farm crew, for putting out such a lovely showing of transplants this season. We sold a whopping 7,557 Red Dog plant starts this season! The final Red Dog starts have left the greenhouse this week, as we prepare for an influx of fall vegetable seedlings from our fearless growers, Midori Farm! Veggie brethren like collards, purple sprouting broccoli, and radicchio are the first to land, followed by winter kales and escarole. Time to start turning under those bolted spring crops to make some real estate available for your fall plots!
DEALS ON FIZZY REFRESHMENTS
We have some salacious DEALS on refreshing beverages at the Corner right now. Chief among them is our suite of Olipop prebiotic sodas currenly on DEALS for $1.99 each, a flavor for every persuasion. We also have great deals on the Reishi sparkling teas, like Schisandra berry or Elderberry Maqui flavors. Finally, there are some steep discounts on the Health-Ade kombucha set, so get fizzy and get dizzy next time you come in to shop!
DIA DE INTERDEPENDENCIA
Sunday is an all-out Chimacum fun fest, as we all know. We are stoked to sponsor the Pancake Breakfast at the Chimacum Grange from 9 to noon. Early birds get the sausage! A new feature of this year’s Interdependence is Mini Golf and Mini Milkshakes at the Chimacum Cafe. Simon has been crushing it, get out there and show the Cafe some love! The Marionberry pie is truly exquisite. Then of course, the main event full of programming at Finnriver, capped off with a DJ Lunch Lady signature fun-filled dance set of club pop bangers. In defense of staff joy, the Corner will be closing early that day, so all of our Sunday crew can get over to Finn while the party is still ripping! It is sure to be an epic day of food, art, community, and culture! Get a good night’s sleep Saturday!
