Dad’s Love
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
It’s tough being a dad. You are most likely the scapegoat of many of your most intimate relationships. And people aren’t all that hot on the patriarchy these days (and with reason!). But as the world turns, there are new iterations of fatherhood unveiling that are grounded in magnanimity and tenderness. As Cameron Winter croons, “You better start a-walkin’ babe / love takes miles.” It’s important to take care of dad, bruised and battered though he may be. That’s why at the Corner this week we encourage you to “Pamper Yr Rooster” and load up on some nice tasty groceries to help him briefly forget the tribulations of modern manhood. Dad’s love - it’s a love we are all chasing, even dad himself.
Local Brews and Links for Papa-San
Dads and beer are as inextricably linked as ketchup and mustard. Drinking with your dad is a cozy rite of passage. Why not throw down on some local brews this weekend to celebrate the old man. Perhaps the ultimate “dad beer” of our local business ecosystem are the iconic tall brown-glass bottles from Port Townsend Brewing. The Amber and the Hop Diggity IPA are the most popular from their bunch of brews. Then, there is the new-old darlings of the local food system, Chimacum Valley Grainery, with their fleet of five beers. Have you tried the Threshold Pale Ale, the newest offering from CVG? Of course, we also have the complex, whimsical, delicious brewings from Propolis. A newer re-addition to the Propolis set is the Montem Dry-Hopped Saison, as well as the brand new addition of their canned sparkling Mead! An all-time classic, however, is SPA: the Spruce Pale Ale. It is like quaffing the spirit of the woods.
Now that dad has his beers, you got to give him some links to go with it! Take advantage of the access to local pork sausage from One Straw Ranch. We have their ginger pear sausages available in links of ground. Another great option is the Uli’s Famous Sausage company. An all-time classic is the Rosemary Chicken Sausage, and the Cheddar Gold Bratwurst is not to be missed. For the more adventurous culinary dad, we have jalapeno cheddar Bison and Beef sausages from Force of Nature. So fire up the grill and crack a cold one, it’s dad’s day after all!
Make Dad Eat His Greens Again
While we all know dad would prefer to exist on protein and carbs alone, there is enough outstanding local roughage on the Produce Porch right now to turn even the most staunch carnivore into a veggie lover. For bunched greens, we have Lacinato Kale and Rainbow Chard from Midori Farm, as well as Red and Green Curly Kales from Red Dog Farm, and Red Russian Kale from Chimalow Produce. For head lettuce, we have Butterheads from Stellar J Farm (on sale!), as well as a complete suite of heads from Red Dog, which includes Frisee! Don’t forget the bagged greens up top, all of which are coming from Jefferson County at the moment, from Stir Fry Mix all the way over to Spinach. Finally, we have an abundant stock of those most petite of greens, i.e. microgreens, from Space Twins Provisions, including broccoli, pea shoots, and the deluxe cilantro varieties. Greens all sizes, all local, all the way!
Tonnemaker Cherries Round 2
WA Grown Organic
CASE DEALS!
We will be sampling red Tonnemaker cherries while supplies last! The first batch ate exquisitely, and we are just as excited about the second batch!
Tonnemaker red cherries are the deal to beat the band. Small quantities of cherries retail at $4.99/lb, while a 5# case of these sweeties goes for $18.99 (save 6 bucks!). 20# cases are made to order and upon request only.
Dads Love Pot(s)
Searching for a gift idea for pops? If he is of the gardener or farmer ilk, might we suggest a new fleet of terra cotta pots for his porch? We recently acquired a large lot of pottery from the Italian brand Deroma, with terra cotta pots of all sizes. You can get the smallest size pot and a saucer for a mere five dollars! The largest size is a 12.2”, and retails for $28.99. It’s big enough to fit something of substance in but easy enough to schlep around. Shoutout to our entire hardworking Nursery staff who has gotten the full dose of early summer scorching, but has still kept on track with the watering schedules for the plants and are keeping things looking lush and verdant out there. Don’t forget to get some potting soil on your way out of the Nursery so you have some medium to get those terra cotta pots planted out!
Satay and Slay
People tend to have their routes through Chimacum Corner and they stick to them. So if your first port of call at the Corner is the pastry case and coffee corner, you are likely to waltz right past an amazing offering from the Corner Kitchen. I’m talking about the Chicken Satay. Pieces of Northwest-sourced chicken are bathed in a coconut curry marinade to become juicy and tender. Then there is a house made peanut sauce for dipping and house made sweet pickles that carry a zing and a bright yellow color from some turmeric at play. This dish is also Dairy Free and Gluten-Free, one of the few items that ticks both of those boxes. It’s the perfect protein on a stick for any admirable masculine figure in one’s life.
Totally Epic Deals
Let’s face it, Dad can’t always wake up and ease into the morning. He’s got to rush out and accomplish some stuff. He needs portable protein to take the edge off of the massive thermos of coffee that gets him going. Fortunately, we have some “epic” deals on Epic brand meat strips, bars, and pork rinds! The Pork Rinds come in a conveniently crushable sized bag and are a real treat. The Bison Bacon Cranberry bar and the Smoked Salmon Maple Strip are some heavy hitters in the snack rotation. Try them all out while the deals are still on!
