SCHOOL’S OUT FOREVA!

Hello Chimacum Corner Community!

For some reason, the unabashed marketing to the American youth culture on “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper tickles me to no end. Video footage of live concerts featuring Alice brandishing a cane and chanting “No more pencils, no more books” in rhythm with the hair-metal adoring crowds is something only the 80s could pull off. It’s Juneuary in Chimacum, and all I want is to hear Alice Cooper blaring from the cabs of highschooler pick-up trucks as they wait in line to head south at the four-way stop. Soon, local 18 year olds will spread out to all parts of the region, continent, globe. Horace Greeley said “Go west, young man,” but if you grew up on the Peninsula, you started out as (north)west as you could go. It is a striking time to enter young adulthood, but our hope is that wherever they go, our Chimacum and Port Townsend kids remember that they come from an amazing farming community that is positioned to stand as an example of a resilient and abundant network of radical folks. This issue is all about celebrating people in your life that are stepping across significant thresholds in their own lives. So toss those caps and live it up this summer! We’ve got the grub to get you started.

Cherries Popping Off!

We had our suspicions that this mild winter would yield some interesting results in the farming cycle this year. Well, one auspicious result is that cherries are weeks ahead of schedule, and arriving from Tonnemaker Hill just in time for graduation!! Luke is particularly pleased with this first round of cherry crop, which is mostly a mix of Carneval and Chelan types (dark red). We will be offering these sweeties at the epic price of $4.99 per lb, with 5 lb. cases at $18.99 (a six dollar savings on the per lb. rate). We will have samples going on the Tonnemaker cherries as well, so you can make sure you really like them before you bring that 5lb case to share at graduation. Rolling from Benton strawberries right into red cherries has the Produce team feeling optimistic about the fruit season ahead!

Corner Caps and “Gowns”

Send that graduate in your life off to the next chapter with some Chimacum Corner merch to remind them of their roots. We’ve got short and long sleeve tees, pullover and zippered style hoodies, trucker or “baseball/dad” hats, and our beautiful bandanas designed by Kira Mardikes, local farmer and artist. Slap an iconic Chimacum Corner “Turnip” sticker on their car as they drive away to new chapters!

Return to Cookie Mountain

Said no one ever: “You really shouldn’t have brought a cookie platter to a graduation party.” The Chimacum Corner pastry case is your first port of call for excellent cookie options. The Corner Kitchen has their own formidable line-up of in house treats. There is the new Pecan Sandy, the extravagant Tahini Marbled Brownie, the pillowy soft Ginger Molasses cookie, the thick, mapley Date and Oat Bar, and the hallowed Rosemary Shortbread. We also have amazing cookies from Chimacum Valley Grainery, both the Rye Sable and the Salty Chocolate Chip. Then, there is the Queen of Cinnamon, Cearra, with her Cinnamon Chocolate Chip, Frosted Snickerdoodle, and Cowboy cookies. Lastly, and don’t sleep on this, the gluten-free chocolate cookie from Pane D’Amore is an absolute banger, right down to its fudgy, gooey core.

Bouquets and Legacies

If you’re keen to surprise the graduate in your life with some fresh, in-county grown cut flowers, the Corner is your spot to source them! We have incredibly luscious straight bunches of clove-scented stock and bouncy ranunculus from the lovely ladies at Frog Hill Farm, as well as many styles of mixed bouquets from Forest Elf Farm, Moonsnail Botanicals, and Fleur de Luna.

Also, it is a beautiful tradition to mark a significant milestone with a planting of some kind. May we be so bold as to suggest a Giant Sequoia? We have a beautiful crop of baby Giant Sequoia from “Sequoia Jim” himself, of Crescent Moon Farm. Available in 5 gallon pots, these babies are vigorous and looking for their forever homes. Watch your graduate grow alongside their “tree twin” over the years! A beautiful tribute to a life.

Screaming deals are there for the taking on C2O brand coconut waters. Available in four flavors, they will be your saving grace in the approaching heat wave that will accompany graduation weekend. If you like pina colada, there is a both a song and a flavor of C2O for you (pineapple). Snag a whole case of your favorite flavor to keep the family well hydrated in the coming days!

We Back the Hacks!

For this lil grocery store, June in Chimacum can only mean one thing: the kickoff of the Farm Hacks Softball season! We are proud to have sponsored the Farm Hacks team for three years running now, including several jersey iterations. Founded by Lane and Julia of Red Dog Farm / Creaky Knees Farm, and currently helmed by Liz Revord, the Farm Hacks is a lighthearted outlet for encouraging athletic farmer joy during the busy ag season. Our very own Produce Buyer, Cass (also of Space Twins Provisions), splits his time between outfield and second base. They play every Tuesday and Thursday at either HJ Carroll Park or Memorial Field. Follow the @farmhacks instagram to stay up to date on all the shenanigans on the diamond! GO HACKS!
