BURGERS AND BRATS
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
It’s that time of year that separates the grill masters from the weekend warriors. Three letters: B,B, and Q. Summer officially arrived on Wednesday, with a cute little mini-heat-dome to turn up the pressure in the fields. It’s also the time of year when farmhands come into the Corner for lunch with semiahmoo-stained knees and burnt necks, wrung out from planting hundreds (if not thousands?!) of linear bed feet of transplants. The icing on this Chimacum Corner Cake? A one-shot-wonder delivery from Handsome Luke of Tonnemaker Hill Farm of the finest strawberries in the land. One cannot exist merely on strawberries, much to the CCF staff’s chagrin. Find out what delectable grillables are lining the cedar boxes and metro racks of our hallowed halls.
THE LAST STRAW
The centerpiece of any grilling excursion is the meat. Fortunately for all the grill queens out there, we just received our huge order of new crop beef and pork from Charlotte and Martin of One Straw Ranch in recent days. We commit to “Whole Animal” purchases from One Straw for both beef and pork, which is advantageous for both us and the farmer, we get a broad assortment of cuts and sausage of our choosing and they get a large bulk wholesale opportunity with upfront payment. Consider it like a business-to-business CSA. We’ve been watching and working with Martin and Charlotte for quite sometime now and were tickled to see One Straw’s latest newsletter, which has great engagement photos of the farming couple starting their journey with pigs 10 years ago. Congratulations on your “delicious decade,” Charlotte and Martin! Celebrate the longevity of this stellar local business by loading up on some ground meats and choice cuts, and get to grillin’!
ALLIUMS? ALLI-YUMZ!
No grill master turns homeward from their supply run without a bountiful basket of alliums (onion family). Fortunately for the community, the produce porch has a bevy of recent arrivals from the allium family that are sure to add that sweet, charred flavor of grilled onions to the spread. For a limited time we have an epic 99 cent deal on Washington yellow onions from Organically Grown Company. Stock up for your next cookout! We also have glorious bunches of green onions in this week from Red Dog Farm, so beautiful that they’d make Booker T. & the M.G.’s proud. Another staff favorite from the onion fam for the grill is Red Dog and Midori farm’s green garlic bunches.
SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE
Looking for some cheery additions to the summer garden? Local sunflower and strawberry starts are available in abundance. Red Dog Farm always provides the gamut of interesting varieties of sunnies, and this year is no exception. Whether you’re a fan of teddy bear doubles, or strawberry blondes, or a classic Giant, they’ve got you covered. Big thanks to Farmer Karyn for providing us with a batch of sunflowers to adorn the corner with as well! Keep an eye out as the grow taller and reach for sunny skies. We also have great starts of both Ever-bearing and June-bearing strawberries from both Midori Farm and Red Dog Farm. Plant some now to enjoy your own berries when the Tonnemaker strawbs are just a nostalgic twinkle in your eye. Sun’s out blooms out!
CUFFIN WITH DA CRUFFIN
There is a new lascivious lady lurking in the pastry case at the Corner Store, and her name is Cardamom Cruffin. First born in Melbourne, and later rising to fame in San Francisco, the Cruffin is a proofed, laminated dough baked in a muffin tin, hence the portmanteau of Croissant / Muffin. The sugared crusty exterior gives way to folded pillowy layers, with the saccharine warming vibes of cardamom throughout. 15 seconds in the microwave takes the experience to a whole ‘nother level. This is a keeper from Chef Brian and company. Level up your next cup of coffee on the way to the job site.
KIMBO SLICES
Every burger needs a square of cheese to feel complete. Fortunately we have a great deal on Organic Valley sliced cheeses! Did you know that the Bishop Farm in Beaver Valley was once a member of the Organic Valley Co-op? Their sign still stands proudly on the edge of their property on Egg and I. Gerald Bishop recently passed, but his grandson Austin still carries on the family legacy of raising quality bovines and hay on their sprawling blue-chip acreage. In addition to OV cheese, perhaps your burger or fries could use some Annie’s Thousand Island dressing, also a great deal this cycle? And if you’re going to show up to the kickback with a veggie tray, some Little Sesame hummus is an elite dipping sauce to accompany your fresh cut local vegetables. A suite of deals to seal the meal!
