WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT

Hello Chimacum Corner Community!

Wooden Boat Festival is a true gathering of skilled tradespeople from all around the world and is the marquee event of the Northwest Maritime Center, an anchor of ocean-based knowledge in our community. This year’s theme is “Sails, Rigging, and Spars.” Nothing puts the wind in our spinnaker quite like eating local food or supporting local makers. We will make you walk the plank if you don’t sidle on down to the Corner to check out what’s hot on the Produce Porch, in Grocery Land, and out in the Nursery! Don’t forget, September is officially decreed “Eat Local Month” in Washington state! And for good reason, as the farms really turn on the faucet this time of year with late season goodies! So come on out and shop local while enjoying the global convergence of all-star mariners in Jefferson County. As ever, the old adage goes, “one hand for you, sailor.”

Stellar Stowage

We’ve got plenty of fabulous late summer fruits to pack your vessel from the crow’s nest to the bilges! It is truly Washington grape season in full effect at the moment. Tonnemaker Hill has amazing Einset and Reliance grapes! We have also had great grapes from Water Moon Farm and anticipate an awesome Interlaken grape harvest from Solstice Family Farm. In addition to grape season, it is full force Asian Pear season too. Many varieties are on offer from local growers as well as Tonnemaker Hill. Lastly, the first of the full scale apple deliveries has landed and we have some crowd favorites like Gala and RedLove, a true red-fleshed apple that Luke and company have been hard at work getting to scale in the last few years. There is also still an amazing bounty of local tomatoes of all stripes! So, lower the gangways and let’s get the stowage rollin’!

Tin Fish Fun

A voyage on the high seas requires fish both fresh and preserved. We will leave the fishing to you, but we do have a great assortment of tin fish to bring aboard. Perhaps the most fun are the assorted tins of anchovies, sardines, and albacore from Patagonia Provisions and Fishwife. The Sardines & Beans from Patagonia and the Albacore in Spicy Olive Oil are some crowd favorites. Support hyperlocal with Lummi Island Wild pink salmon cans and Katfish Salmon smoked wild keta salmon cans in your berthing. We even have smoked mussels and oysters from Ekone to get your bivalve on! The creme de la creme though: wild Tuna Belly cans from Cape Cleare. Turn on, tune in, and tin out!

Seafaring Salads

It is not advisable to take plants aboard a vessel, but nobody said anything about cut greens! The Corner Kitchen has an amazing trio of greens based grab and go salads, featuring Salad Mix from Space Twins Provisions. Their three offerings include the Blackened Chicken, the Country Store, and the Peanut & Tempeh! The Blackened Chicken features local Sungolds, the Country Store features local beets and eggs, and the Peanut & Tempeh features amazing bean-based tempeh from Squirrel & Crow in Portland. All of the dressings are ideated and created in house as well. For a fast lunch on the quarter deck, look no further than the Corner Kitchen salad selections!

Fall Classics

Of course, for all the landlubbers out there, it’s time for some Fall Color around the yard and in the planters. The Corner Nursery has some great selections of Mums as well as Echinacea, featuring the bronzes, burgundies, sherberts, pinks, and yellows we all love about fall. We can hardly wait until the decorative gourds arrive, but for now, keep the house cheery with fall classics as you cut back the glory of summer.

Now Hiring!

For the nightcrawlers, we have a Closing Grocery Stocker position open! This is for folks that don’t mind working through the conventional dinner hour, who like resetting spaces after a bustlin’ day of shopping, and who gladly pick up the torch from a dedicated morning team. If these sound of interest, we encourage you to apply swiftly!

The weekend of September 19th and 20th is the 24th annual Jefferson County Farm Tour! We are proud to be Farm Tour Central once again. We will have a booth with information and media provided by The Production Alliance outside of the store in the Nursery area. There is a strong core of local farms that participate every year in the Farm Tour, and for many farms it is one of the few times to showcase their hard work and skill to the general public. There are some new exciting additions to Farm Tour this year as well, like Red Dog Farm and Chimalow Produce! Also be sure to check out the calendar of Special Events and Workshops taking place throughout the weekend! And don’t forget that Farm Tour After Party is popping off at Finnriver from 5-8pm featuring live music from Wolf Mountain, a local bluegrass and Americana act! It’s fittin’ to be a hoot! To hype yourself up, be sure to re-watch the 2021 JeffCo Farm Tour promo video featuring Tomoki Sage on a daring journey through the farmlands and grocery stores of Jefferson County!
