LEAVE NO STONE FRUIT UNTURNED
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
Ever realize that August has no federal holidays? Must be that since it is such a freaking epic month of bounty, it doesn’t need a reason to celebrate. It has been “hot, flat, and crowded” at the Corner Store of late, which at times feels hectic but mostly it is exciting to see the store thriving in its moment. This ‘25 season feels special, in part because of the rad crew that has coalesced here, but also because of the way in which crops have materialized for growers this year. It is particularly wild how much the stone fruit crop can vary year to year. Last year was infamously poor, so maybe in light of that the bounty feels particularly sparkly this year. At any rate, we are slotting into the peak week of stone fruit offerings from Tonnemaker Hill, and we couldn’t be more jazzed to show off the grower’s fruit. Time to live “Stone Free” like Jimi, and get some midseason peaches in your mouth!
Fruit of the Loam
The second we saw that first case of “Delp” variety yellow peaches come off the pallet Wednesday, we knew we were hitting that “peak week” excellence in the stone fruit category. Grown at Tonnemaker Hill since 1967, and one of the largest plantings in the orchard, “Delp”’s are full-bodied, with beautiful orange and red color variations, full flavor, full juice, and truly freestone. That’s the horse we’re runnin’ this week, and boy does she have legs. So like we said, whether you’re slurpin’, bakin’, freezin’, or cannin’, you’re sure to be dazzled by Tonnemaker’s latest stone fruit set.
Case Deals
The big one for case deals sthis week is our $25 full case (~10lb) of freestone yellow peaches from Tonnemaker Hill! Also available in 5# cases for $15 as well! Cannin’, grillin’, or just straight chillin’, it’s true one-touch peach hour on the Produce Porch. No second fiddle, we’ve also got yellow Nectarines from Tonnemaker at the same price points as the yellow peaches. We also have cases of Hermiston cantaloupes, cases of Midori pickling cucumbers, and bigger boxes of blueberries from Valley Rock and Spring Rain. Make some hay y’all, it’s August!
Totally Baked
If you give a mouse a flat of peaches, you’re gonna have to give them a solid cast of supporting characters to do those peaches up right. Fortunately for you, the Grocery Team has a whole set of products to facilitate your fruit-processing endeavors. We have a selection of Canning Jars from Azure, as well as Citric Acid for canning low acid items, and Pomona’s Pectin and Agar Agar, which augment the texture of jams and jellies. We have large sized Raw Apple Cider, White, and 6% Aged Balsamic vinegars, as well as pickling spice and pickling salt for all those pickle-hounds out there. Probably the most important order of the day is peach pie making, so don’t sleep on our baking set, which has Tapioca and Corn Starches, as well as Gelatin for setting your fruit contents. We also have amazing flours from Chimacum Valley Grainery and Organic Butters to achieve a superior crust, or if you are in a pinch on time we have pre-made Whidbey Pie Crusts in the freezer section. With cases of peaches just under $2.50 per lb, you will have plenty of funds to stock up on the sundry items necessary for transforming your fruit scores into high art.
Pots N Packs
The Nursery has begun the transition to fall, and is kicking it off with a head start on a large order of ceramic pots from Down to Earth. Many different sizes, finishes, and hues, with some up to the equivalent of a 25 gallon pot. If you have a large house plant that needs to be repotted, we have a pot for you. In addition to the menagerie of decorative ceramics, we also have a one dollar off sale on all remaining seed packets packed for 2025. That includes all brands, like Saltwater Seeds, Deep Harvest, Inside Passage, Friends of the Trees, etc. Take advantage of the deal to store up some seed for next spring!
Galloping Yogurtie
For full sun mornings when the heat cranks quickly, nothing beats a bowl of yogurt with some fresh fruit. Right now we have great deals on the Cocojune line of organic cultured coconut, which is a dairy free yogurt. We have small protein-laden cups of Cocojune in several flavors for roughly a dollar off, and the larger tubs of vanilla and plain cocojune for three dollars off! Cut a fresh Tonnemaker “Delp” peach into it and you are off to the races! Bonus points for throwing some Stellar J blueberries in too! And maybe some Hermiston cantaloupe as well, now you’re talkin’.
