SUMMER TRAIL SNACKS
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
In “Song of the Open Road,” Walt Whitman entreats us “To know the universe itself as a road, as many roads, as roads for traveling souls.” What better way to take heed of Walt than by getting out on a new trail, or a hallowed one? As summer fades, we hustle to gather up all the outdoor fun and ease we can savor. There’s nothing like picking first chanterelle flushes in shorts and tees. Or getting deep into the Olympics. The Corner is your unofficial pack outfitter, we’ve got loads of delightful snacks and treats to fill up your stores. Whether you’re going on a short hike and want to bring some delightful fresh fruit for your pit stop, or you’re overnighting and need to score some deals on some bars, pouches, or trail mix, we’ve got something in store for ya. Follow along to see what awaits you behind those infamous swingin’ doors.
So Fetch That Stone Fruit
If the yellow peach is the “Regina George” of the fruit set at the moment, there is a whole cast of Mean Girls in the fructose department plotting to weave you into their saccharine ploys. Yellow and White Nectarines from Tonnemaker Hill are juicy and delightful, as well as their more hipster cousins, the Donut Peach and the exotic Nectaplum. On Wednesdays we wear pink, especially when we chow down on the gorgeous offerings of local plums that are in-house at the moment. We have Stanley prune plums, Shiros, Mystery Reds from Barbro, Santa Rosas, Green Gage, and more! We won’t try to make fetch happen, but we will encourage you to try all the flavorful stone fruit that is laying resplendent about the Porch. And plums are the perfect utensil free snack out on the dusty paths!
CASE DEALS!
New for cases this week is the sumptuous 10# case of Midori Farm Oxheart Tomatoes. Full body tear-drop shaped red canners, these babies are a consensus local farm favorite for all your saucing endeavors. Score these stunners for $38 on 10 pounds, over two dollars off per pound! We also have a solid grip of Beef Steaks from Red Dog Farm 10# cases for $30! Mix and match and get saucing. Last but not least, we have the screaming deal of 10 pounds of Tonnemaker yellow peaches (either Delp or Canadian Harmony varietals) for 25 bucks!
Tall Cans for Quenching
No backpack is complete without a refreshing local tall can in the water bottle holster. We’d like to introduce a relatively new vendor: No Boat Brewing from Snoqualmie. They have taken the beer set by storm in recent months. With their appealing can art and razor-exact brew recipes, their beers are instant classics. Whether you like a classic American Lager with tasteful origins (“Days that Be”), a crisp and exact LOTR-inspired Imperial IPA (“In the Dankness, Bine Them”), a refreshing homage to the Vietnamese rice lager (“Bia Hoi”), or a dank IPA dedicated to the Big Unit himself (“Jandy Rohnson”), No Boat has you dialed. Big thanks to Zach Seehorn, Director of “Sails” and Port Townsend dad, for bringing us into the fold, so to speak. An excellent complement to No Boat beverages are the relatively newish Hop Water cans from hometown heroes Propolis Brewing. Nothing says self care on the trail like Propolis “SPA water” with spruce. The Mellow H2O is extremely delectable as well. Whether you need to stay hydrated or dehydrated in style, we’ve got something for you in the beverage set at the Corner.
Straight From the Pack Wrap
It’s always nice to have a head start on trail cuisine. A signature dish on the dusty thoroughfares is the Chicken Curry Wrap from our Corner Kitchen. Chunks of chicken bath in the yellow curry sauce, a cool respite from the full alpine sun. This is a time-honored Corner recipe, and popular for good reason. Snag one on the road out of town!
Plant a Woodland Wonderland
We are fortunate to have had a large order of beautiful Northwest native plants land in our Nursery from Storm Lake Growers out of Monroe. Storm Lake is widely regarded as a trusted, premier source for high-quality native plant starts. If you can’t grow a tomato or eggplant to save your life, you are likely situated in prime territory for a lush interplanting of Northwest natives. From Oregon Ashes all the way down to Kinnickinnick, and everything between, this late summer season at the Corner Nursery is prime time to expand your regionally suited plantings. Serviceberry, Red Elder, and Ocean Spray collide with Nootka rose, Red Osier Dogwood, and Salal to fill out your landscape. Be sure to take a perusing stroll through the Nursery the next time you are in for some fruit and veg!
Our most recent center end-cap inside the store is a who’s who of tasty road treats. Peter Rabbit Organics fruit pouches in flavors like Apple Sweet Potato Corn, Strawberry Banana, and Apple Pea Spinach are all a dollar off. Bars from Nature’s Bakery, Kate’s, and Gomacro are all at some pretty pleasurable price points too. For the savory of the bunch, we have Gimme brand seaweed snacks for sub-two-bucks a piece. If an all-day lounge at the beach is more your speed, snag a case of Nixie soda waters in flavors like Black Cherry Lime, Lime Ginger, Lemon, and Grapefruit for under five dollars! These deals are good enough to elicit a “barbaric yawp,” Walt Whitman style!
Farm Tour Approacheth
Fire up your diesel engines, Jefferson County Farm Tour is coming in hot! For the weekend of September 13th and 14th, Chimacum Corner transforms into “Farm Tour Central,” with a welcome tent designed to help folks orient to the weekend’s programming. We are proud to be a Presenting Partner of Farm Tour and always look forward to a weekend that celebrates the best of what our county has to offer ag-wise. Look for a little “lay of the land” article that our Marketing Team crafted for the Farm Tour Insert in the PT Leader! With other interesting and informative articles, it will be a neat souvenir to have for this 23rd Annual iteration of Farm Tour. This year’s theme is “Strengthening awareness of local Food Resilience and security efforts happening in Jefferson County.” As connectors of all things food-related, we agree that this year’s theme is impeccably timely and will yield lots of fertile discussion. Keep following along and save the date!
The 23rd Annual Jefferson County Farm Tour is in just a few weeks! You can help out -- and meet people, have fun, and take home some Farm Tour goodies -- by volunteering on Saturday or Sunday. This beloved annual event can't happen without many helping hands!
