PLANT FRUIT!
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
Picking berries has to rank near the top of life’s greatest activities. It’s an addicting yet grounding practice, with a healthy dose of stretching and concentrating. And don’t forget the quality control tasting! Maybe you already have your own cherished berry patch, or maybe you are dreaming of one. Now is the time to stake your claim and plant your fruit, whether it lives on a tree or in a shrub. Around here, March means moving soil and digging holes. It’s going to be a fruit-tastic spring! Follow along to see all of the edible wonders on tap at CCF these days.
Berries and More
The Chimacum Corner Nursery is awash in edible plants! One of our premier offerings at the moment are potted Blueberries and Raspberries from Van Klaveren. We have all the tried and true varieties suitable for our area. Two classics are the mondo-sized blueberries of the “Chandler” variety, and the classic red fruit of the “Tulameen” raspberry. Did you know that an individual raspberry is actually an aggregation of drupelets? Drupelet is officially our new favorite word. In addition to potted berries, we continue to have an outstanding selection of bare root Fruit Trees and Shrubs. Be sure to check out our selection of fancy “Fruit Salad” Trees - these are rootstock with grafts of multiple different species of fruiting stock on top, an orchardist’s marvel! In addition to all of these cultivated varieties, we have a beautiful stock of bare root native berry plants, like the Serviceberry, Robin Wall Kimmerer’s poster child. Be sure to take a full lap around the Greenhouse when you come to shop plants, as many of these treasures are located on the far side. Our talented Nursery Team is on hand to talk shop about any and all things growing!
One small nursery side note: Midori and Red Dog Farms have given the word that the first plant starts of the season will arrive next week!
Blues and Greens
We are singing the blues on the Produce Porch these days, and they are sweet tunes. The California crop of certified organic blueberries has been tasting amazing in recent days, particularly the Family Tree label. Whether they are topping your favorite granola and yogurt combo, blended in a smoothie, or bopped directly in your mouth, these berries are nature’s sprinkles, but with antioxidants!
Smoothie Town
If you prefer your berries liquefied, we have the berry building blocks for your next epic smoothie! We carry a broad selection of frozen berries from Northwest Wild Foods, including their very own Superberry Blend. Based out of Burlington, Northwest Wild Foods has an impressive collection of frozen fruits, including harder to find wild varieties, in their online catalog. With a freezer full of frozen berries, you can blend to your heart’s content!
Nothing delights the early morning senses more than a berry-laden bowl of yogurt. Fortunately for us, there are some great deals happening on the “yogurt alternatives” from both Forager and Cocojune! Either line would serve as a proud base for all of your preferred yogurt toppers. Both brands offer a vanilla and a plain flavor, and Forager even has their own spin on a Greek-style alt-yogurt. For a creamy, refreshing beverage, take advantage of the savings on the Forager kefir-style Blueberry yogurt drink! All this talk of yogurt has Turnip dreaming of Center Valley Granola… sigh.
Corner Made Granola
The “Center Valley Granola” has been a main stay on the cereal shelf for quite some time, but we feel inclined to boost your awareness of it as we eek our way closer and closer to full blown berry season. With the arrival of the Cali blueberries and deals on yogurts are present, we highly suggest snagging a bag of this house made delight. Loaded with nutritious organic ingredients and toasted to perfection. This granola isn’t hiding any unnecessary fillers or sweeteners, just plain goodness.
