GONNA EAT A LOT OF PEACHES

Hello Chimacum Corner Community!

It is officially fire season in the northwest. Our thoughts and prayers are scattered all throughout the Northwest as family and friends become displaced and endangered. As the smoke progressively settled in to Chimacum this week, so too has a wildfire of amazing produce ripped through the Farmstand, leaving delighted bellies in its wake. Early August, it’s a real doozy. The Produce department has been consistently breaking its own records, and is truly “on fire” like Bruce Springsteen. The Crown Jewel of this week’s fruit bonanza is the Tonnemaker Hill yellow peach. Luscious, beautifully hued, and freestone, it is definitely “peak peach” around these parts. The Produce Porch is thus a castle fit for a Princess (Peach). For any and all affected by the current fires, our hearts go out to you. We hope the wonderful wares at the Corner can offer some balm to these troubling times. Perhaps a “pandowdy” is in your future! A “pandowdy” is an old American “spoon pie” type fruit dessert, with spiced fruit on the bottom and a rolled crust on top that is cracked open to allow the fruit juices to soak in. Though it is typical to use apples, a peach pandowdy has a real nice ring! Life’s a real peach these days.

Millions of Peaches

The main event of the week is the Tonnemaker Hill single-layer, one-touch, Freestone Yellow Peaches. According to this article by Michael Pollan, Alice Waters famously served David Masumoto’s “Sun Crest” peach totally unadorned at Chez Panisse. The Tonnemaker Hill peach would have been on the menu had Chez Panisse formed in Seattle. As we have moved into the freestone varieties of yellow peaches, now is the time for all your fruit preservation endeavors! In a stroke of luck, we will also have freestone varieties of Yellow and White Nectarines from Tonnemaker Hill as well this weekend. Let it rip! Time to slurp!

Cone Heads

As the Nursery Crew has cheekily decreed via their reader board, “Coneflower brings all the Bees to the Yard!” Full summer means full blooms at the Corner Nursery. In addition to “Kim’s Knee High” pink coneflower, the Nursery also has an amazing selection of perennial bloomers, like “Amethyst Lips” Salvia, “St. Mary’s” Sun Rose, “Goldsturm” Black Eyed Susan, and “Gold Dust” Crocosmia. Pleasure your pollinators with the inclusion of some fun new blooming perennial varieties from the Corner Nursery! All of these varieties can handle the full sun and drought potentials of peak summer.

Peaches All the Way Down

From Hors D’Ouevres to the Entree, Grocery has all the means to make your peaches slay. For an appetizer, may we suggest acquiring your favorite crackers and a chef’s log of Mystery Bay Chevre, then creating thin slices of Tonnemaker Hill peaches to put atop chevre crackers with local honey drizzled atop. Shoot dang!! Your main could feature One Straw Ranch Pork Chops, conveniently packed in two packs, cooked to perfection in the skillet with a healthy topping of grilled peaches to make the dish really sing. Some local roasted cauliflower or blanched green beans would seal the deal on an extremely high caliber locavore leaning meal.

For the optimal peaches and cream experience, try one of the Ice Cream for Bears pints of ice cream. Grass-fed and Sweetened with Raw Honey, we carry three flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Honey! The Honey flavor is particularly divine with sliced Tonnemaker peaches. Ice Cream for Bears is dedicated to sourcing their dairy from regeneratively-managed, rotationally-grazed herds. Their base consists of just milk, eggs, and honey. And they bring the flavor to back up the ethos of the product. This ice cream is the preferred brand of Winnie the Pooh!

TARBOO FEST 2026

The Quilcene Lantern is back with their marquee event of the summer season, TARBOO, the Olympic Peninsula’s Music Festival. Running Friday August 21st and Saturday August 22nd, TARBOO features many local and regional independent artists whose sounds cut across a wide, eclectic swath of musical disciplines. This year’s headliners are Alela Diane, a Portland-based hauntingly beautiful singer-songwriter, and La Luz, Seattle’s exuberant “surf noir” shredders. With camping, the Milk Shed bar, tons of vendors, and the gorgeous setting of the grounds at the Lantern, it is sure to be a hoot and a half! Check out their website for a full line-up and more info on this awesome opportunity to experience live music!
