EVERGREEN DREAMIN’

Hello Chimacum Corner Community!

While it has been an exceedingly mild fall thus far, that doesn’t mean that things aren’t feeling festive around town. Holiday lighting has unfurled from all corners of the county, including upon at least one farm’s hoophouse! Nothing says “holidays in the Evergreen State” quite like some lush arrangements of coniferous greenery. Whether you work with cedar, holly, salal, fir, or magnolia, there is an abundant supply of flora to bedeck your halls. There is also a whole host of living evergreen trees available right here at the Corner, so that you might take home a small piece of the forest with you. Now is the season of decorating, whether on your home or on the plate. Read on to see how we might kit you out at the Corner.

Chilly Verde

Just in time for the start of winter holiday season, we have some elegant ornamental evergreen offerings from local farmers. Local boy Sebastian Edgerton, fellow grocery store worker and small farmer, has put together a sweet collection of mixed evergreen wreaths with tasteful embellishments. In addition, as is store tradition, Bil Thorn of Sky Island Farm, down in Humptulips, has delivered a fresh lot of cedar garlands, and cedar and salal wreaths for living decor. You can get a sense of the garlands by looking at the ones we have festooned on the front walkway and the staircase inside the store. Speaking of living decor, we have a fresh lot of Noble Firs and Giant Sequoias from Crescent Moon Farm in Port Angeles! We are also have a small run of cut Douglas Fir Christmas trees from a local Quilcene operator Noble Valley Christmas Trees. Secure your holiday tree, wreath, and garland today!

Local Gift Boxes

Sometimes it is hard to narrow down giving a gift to just one item. A fun way to incorporate diverse gift ideas is to pick up a CCF branded Cedar Box and fill it with goodies from the Corner. Our cedar boxes are made by James Harding of Divine Doors, from locally milled cedar. There are many ways to fill a cedar box, but we have decorated our main display table on the Produce Porch with some helpful ideas. We love putting a Corner Store mug with a bag of local coffee from Sunrise, Catkin, or Port Townsend Roasting. We also have a raging collective sweet tooth, and as such, love including local honey from Sailing S, Elevated Chocolates, and local jams from Spring Rain and Grey Fox Farms. If you want to lend your gift box some height, consider including a bottle of wine from Puget Street Imports, a new import label from Roland Nudelman, a longtime friend and collaborator at the Corner. Nothing says “you are loved” like a box full of local joys.

Ridin’ Curdy

With the advent of citrus season, the Corner Kitchen has restocked their luxurious Lemon Curd. Available on its own or featured in the Mascarpone Biscuit, it is silky smooth and bright. Pro-tip: A next level plug-and-play desert - get a Lemon Curd container and a slice of the Basque Cheesecake and apply a liberal dollop of curd to your slice. Easy and deluxe. Celebrate citrus, the “evergreen” of the subtropics!

RadEEEKulous Radicchio

As local baby green season winds down, we still have a bounteous collection of WA-grown chicories for your gustatory pleasure. Red Dog Farm has you covered on the ball-type varietals, offering two types of Chioggia Radicchio. Midori Farm has been delivering a steady stream of Treviso (purple football) and Castelfranco (upright green with red confetti) Radicchios as well. We have also brought in some extra fancy types from Boldly Grown, including the “champagne of radicchios,” the Rosalba type. Cut into fine ribbons and spread atop a winter salad, the Rosalba is unmatched in its visual delight, and has that classic bitter chicory flavor you would expect. We have also recently added the Belgian Endive back into the rotation! Please check weekly to see the rotation of varieties!

Pick up a literal mole (6.022 x 10^23) of 36 ct avocados for the sweet price of 2 for $5! This deal will last for the first two weeks of December, while supplies last! Many cases allotted to this deal will be from the Equal Exchange avocado cooperative, a small aggregate of organic avocado growers in Mexico, some of whom we got to meet when they visited the Corner with OGC last year!

Chimacum Holiday Weekend

One last thing: we would like to put out a “Save the Date” reminder for the Chimacum Holiday Weekend, December 13th and 14th, happening all around Chimacum at participating locations. In addition to the Chimacum Arts and Crafts Fair and the Farmer’s Craft Fair, Finnriver, Chimacum Cafe, and CCF will be open all day both weekends. Shop local for this holiday season, and enjoy cozy seasonal treats and live entertainment! Also, keep your eyes peeled for the impending completion of the light-hearted Snowbale People, stationed all around Chimacum at participating businesses, and sponsored by the Corner!
