We have a running joke in the office at the Corner: “Does it protein?” It would seem that corporate food America is intent on including protein in literally any potential food product they can. The irony is that Americans on average already consume ample quantities of protein, but around 90% do not consume enough fiber. The inclusion of protein in packaged goods drifts from the mission: we want to eat healthier. Purchasing a whole or majority quantity of an animal is, we feel, a step in the right direction to holistic protein intake. So, funnily enough, Thanksgiving is probably one of the few times in a seasonal cycle when a lot of families purchase a whole animal to eat together. As ever, we are one source for your holiday protein, and we have launched the Protein Pre-Order page on our website, which has a definitive download on all the FAQs for the process. Speaking of holidays, don’t be afraid when the “grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize!” BOO!

It is that time folks. Our Protein Pre-order Portal is LIVE and direct on our website! There are three options this year: Tailfeather Farm Pasture Raised Turkeys, Mary’s Organic Turkeys, and Hempler’s Honey Cured Hams! We highly encourage ordering through the website. The Protein Pre-Order page has detailed information on all the ins and outs of reserving your holiday proteins (including reserving things beyond Thanksgiving!) We also encourage people to reserve as early as possible, as we have limited stock.
All pre-orders require a $10 non-refundable deposit, per item ordered, paid at the time of ordering. This is credited towards the final price when you pick up your item.
Tailfeather Farm Turkey ($11.99/lb) Truly pasture-raised turkeys from Walla Walla, WA. Support a small farm using regenerative farming practices where the birds are rotated continually onto fresh valley pastures and fed locally milled Palouse grains. Providing the best turkey lives possible. These beautiful birds are coming to the Olympic Peninsula, via a great regional food hub network hop! Traveling from producers in Walla Walla, to LINC Foods in Spokane, then to Puget Sound Food Hub in Mount Vernon, who will complete their final leg the journey here to us on the Corner! Pretty cool huh?!

For folks that love the seasonal tang of the cran, but don’t have the bandwidth to make their own scratch cranberry sauce, our Corner Kitchen is back to whipping up their signature Cranberry Sauce. Slow simmered Organic PNW grown cranberries and LOCAL Sailing S Apiary Honey make the perfect base and are further kicked up by orange zest and spices. Providing a versatile tang to any dishes and will keep long after the serving platters and stemmed glasses are put back in the cupboard. For proof of excellence, try the Cranberry Sauce on the new Turkey Cranberry sandwich, available in our deli section at the store!
Honeyed Bunches of Greens
There are many names for the Pacific Northwest, but from a farming perspective, we ought to name it the “Kingdom of Cruciferi.” We continue to be fortunate to have ample bunched greens from our friends at Red Dog Farm: Lacinato, Green Curly, and Purple Curly Kales, as well as Collards and Rainbow Chard. Fall bunched greens have that extra frost-kissed sweetness as well! It’s important to balance the sweet with the bitter, and thus we also have an amazing selection of radicchios and chicories from Midori and Red Dog. A novel addition to the Radicchio scene is the “Yellowstone” cultivar, which is a golden radicchio, first introduced to the US by the Culinary Breeding Network in tandem with Uprising Seeds and Italian seed growers! We also have Red Dog Frisee and Escarole to round out the winter salad regime. As Thumper recites, “Eating greens is a special treat…”

While it is imperative to keep some inventory of candy on hand for Halloween trick-or-treaters, a nifty idea to put in the gardener’s pillowcase is a handful of flowering bulbs for spring beauty! Camas Lilies, Tulips, Narcissus and more are all available to pick up in the Nursery and to get in your soil before the cold settles in for good! Check in with a Nursery person in the Greenhouse for all your queries regarding planting fall bulbs for spring fluorescence.
Treat your tricksters this All Hallow’s Eve with some quality candies at reasonable prices! We have some good deals on Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups as well as Panda brand Black Licorice soft chews. Another staff favorite (not on deal) are the Unreal Dark Chocolate Peanut Gems! Trick out your candy kit for the youngsters. Getting free candy is a high water mark of youth.
