CITRUS SUNSHINE

Hello Chimacum Corner Community!

With all these high-pressure, sunny days we’ve been having, you can almost squint your eyes and look southward all the way to Califor-nye-aye! This sunshine streak has its mirror on the Produce Porch here, where we have been rockin’ on the citrus scene for quite some time now. As we don’t have much abundance in the citrus department locally, it always comes as a winter treat (when local is scarce anyhow) to sample the many wares of southern climes. From the cutest Kumquat to the most bodacious Pummelo, we have a little bit of everything in Vitamin-C-land out here. There’s no healthier way to chase off the winter doldrums than nourishing fruits! We are excited to be back at the Newsletter after a small hiatus, and look forward to what bounty 2026 might bring. Thanks for tuning in!

Citrus Sunshine

Even despite the ill-fortuned run of precipitation in the California citrus orchards this winter, we are still getting into some of the best citrus cultivars of the season in the coming weeks. Right now the main players are the Cara Cara oranges, which are one dollar off per pound through the end of January, and the last run of the 4lb bags of Navels from Johansen Ranch (4lbs for $5.99!). However, we just got our first run of “Moro” blood oranges, which are eating fantastic, and we await the heralded return of the Kishu Mandarin, tiny but mighty in flavor, a staff fave! Now is the time to indulge in all of the vitamin C a person could ask for. One final slight tease: TDE mandarins will be landing in the coming weeks! IYKYK.

Snag a Sample Too!

Right now we have Aaron alternating between sampling the Cara Cara oranges and the Navels from the Johansen Ranch 4lb bags we have been featuring. We are sampling produce Sunday - Wednesday every week. We tend to sample things that we find awesome, but the proof is in the pudding, so try things out to determine the delectability for yourself!

“I know a girl who reminds me of Cher
She’s always changing the color of her hair
But she don’t use nothing that you buy at the store
She likes her hair to be real orange
She uses tangerines”

Lemon Curd? WORD!

A newsletter about citrus would be remiss not to mention the deluxe Lemon Curd made in-house by our fabulous Corner Kitchen team. This stuff is silky, smooth, and sharp. We are laying to rest the Lemon Curd Mascarpone Biscuit for the season, stay tuned for the next berry-themed Mascarpone biscuit on the docket!

Under Construction, But in Bloom!

What started as a proposed simple re-organization of the Nursery Display areas quickly metamorphosed into a full dismantling of crumbling pallet-based infrastructure. It was a cathartic day on the forklift, to be sure. We are excited for a fresh start in the Nursery, coupled with a fresh captain in our Nursery Manager, Turner. We will be rolling out a new modular, composite pallet based display system in the coming days. For now, the Nursery is still open, and we have a lovely selection of the first blooms of the season! Everyone’s favorite winter wonders, Hellebores from Blooming Advantage, and hardy camelias are out front of the shop for your viewing and taking-home pleasure. We have also received the first seeds from Saltwater Seed and others, and have propagation supplies available for those trying to keep pace with the farmers. So begins the annual odyssey of plant life!

We have some great deals on “wellness beverages” of several kinds. First off are the Suja Organic Wellness Shots (and Juices), particularly the Immunity Turmeric Pineapple. We also have a good deal on the R.W. Knudsen Elderberry Echinacea fruit juice (100% juice!). Finally, warming bevs like the Choice Organics line of teas as well as Organic India teas are a balm to the throat and the soul. Don’t forget some local honey to round out your immunity boost!

Front Entrance & Parking Lot Work

Monday 01/26 thru Friday 01/30 we will be undergoing exterior site improvements. Please use the alternative routes of entry from either Chimacum Road or Rhody Drive as needed. Follow flagging and signage to enter at the side of the Produce Porch.

In tandem with the full demolition and rebuild of the Nursery Display areas, we have some work lined up to improve the footing and accessibility of the handicap parking, front entrance, and adjacent nursery space. Along with a a sorely-needed regrade of the entire parking lot as well. We hope that you can bear with us and cultivate patience as we tend to these improvements to better serve the community in the busier months.
