BARE (ROOT) NECESSITIES
Hello Chimacum Corner Community!
Backyard fruit is a thing of beauty. Full-fledged orchards become abundance machines, generating gifts that are easy to exchange and then awaited patiently ‘til next season. Part of the core mission of the Chimacum Corner Nursery is making edible plants available to our community to promote nature connection, food abundance, and maintaining horticultural skills. We take a big leap of faith every spring and acquire hundreds of berry, fruit, and nut-bearing plants with the hope that they are whisked off in trailers, pickups, Subarus, and even a Prius or two, and then woven into the ecological fabric of our community. Having edible plants provides a beautiful meditation on staying in touch with the seasons. Our seasoned and highly cerebral Nursery Staff is on hand to help you get to chanting with your soil.
Orchard Omnipotence
As the nursery coalesces into its new form, we are stoked to herald the arrival of Bare Root Fruit Trees! Neatly tucked into their new “sawdust boulevards” at the back of the Nursery, the selection is at its peak at the moment. Several varieties of Apples, Cherries, Peaches, Plums, Nectarines, Apricots, and Walnuts abound. We even have some multi-grafted “Fruit Salad” Trees from Biringer Nursery that make for a fun science experiment in any backyard orchard. We will also have bare root Frost Peach, Asian Pear, and Golden Raspberry cultivars available from hometown hero Heartwood Nursery. Carefully selected months in advance by our Edible Plant Buyer, Jude, the cultivars we have represent the best of what we can grow in our PNW Climate (Zone 8A to be exact!). And don’t forget to swing through the greenhouse to pick up some fruit tree fertilizer, acid mix, and mycorrhizal fungi inoculant to feed the soil that will feed your trees. Turnip lovingly beseeches you to get plantin’!
Tropical Roots N’ Fruits
Thanks to our flagship distributor, Organically Grown Company, we are enjoying a bevy of beautiful tropical fruits and roots that are in season in their respective biomes. Gorgeous pink and yellow dragonfruits, smooth Ataulfo mangoes, and even Cherimoya, those beloved green dragon-eggs. On the root side, we continue to stock beautiful ginger rhizomes from Kolo Kai Organics on the island of Kauai. It’s never too late to get on “island time.”
SNAG A SAMPLE
We will be sampling some combination of TDE mandarins and Benzler Navel Oranges over the coming days.
You Can Buy Yourself Flowers
If you needed an excuse to treat yourself, there’s no better time than valen-time! And the arrival of the first local tulips is a pretty good reason to follow through on that urge as well. Go ahead! Prove no one can love you better than you. If a bouquet isn’t really your style, then check out the first blooms of the season in the nursery too.
Poppin’ Bottles
Congratulations on surviving dry January! You earned a mid-February Valentine’s indulgence (or two). Our Grocery Manager Bruce does an amazing job with our wine selection at the store. Anything from Puget Street Imports is a delight. A staff favorite is the line of wines from Miles Garrett, of Willow Creek, CA. The Pinot Noir and the Dragon Field Blend offer funky bright reds. If rosé is more of your deal, we have a lovely Cotes de Gascogne bottle called “La Teuf.” Don’t forget the local legends Marrowstone Vineyards! For cider, we always carry what’s in season from Finnriver, as well as Alpenfire and Eaglemount. If your lover is a beer drinker, consider a special can from No Boat Brewing or one of the five amazing beers from Chimacum Valley Grainery. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
